Real Estate Signs Ordinance in Johns Creek
The City of Johns Creek has begun weekend patrols to enforce the city's sign ordinance, according to Director of Community Development Mike Williams. Officers have removed many improperly-placed signs in the last month.
Avoiding removal of your real estate sign (and a possible citation) is easy if you follow the City's sign ordinance. Most real estate signs, including directional signs, fall within the definition of "standard informational sign" in the ordinance. As such, their placement is restricted as follows:
- No signs may be placed within the public right-of-way. Code enforcement staff advise that an easy way to locate the right-of-way is to use visual cues like fire hydrants and utility poles;
- Signs may be placed on private property, but only with the consent of the property owner; and
- Signs on private roadways may be placed no closer than ten feet to the back of the curb.
Director Williams also reminds real estate professionals and others that the sign ordinance strictly prohibits the attachment of balloons to signs. If you want to use balloons, keep them out of the public right-of-way and attach them to something other than your sign.

Jim...it is such a shame that cities have to have such restrictive rules on signs! Especially in this tough real estate market.
But, it is the lazy agent that can't pick up their Open House signs afterwards that mess it up for those of us who run an organized business. I mean, why does it have to be Tuesday and your Open House sign from Sunday is still out there?
Now the balloons.....I just REALLY don't get that one! But, again, if they are not disposed of properly....
I just listed a home in Cumming and I know the subdivision does not allow ANY directional signs...so my advertising has be be good!
Thomas Ramon Realty Midtown Atlanta Real Estate Balloons in many areas are considered a moving sign, and not allowed. Years ago that was a rule in Fairfax County VA in the late 1980's. Sometimes signage becomes abusive and an eyesore...so I can at least understand it. However, I do agree with you about lazy agents! They leave signs up all over the place, leave lockboxes on homes long after closings, they are unresponsive to phone calls and it gives all of us that abide by the rules a very bad name. By the way, in Gwinnett county the fines are very steep for this! I am talking in the thousands!
