Do You Watch Fox News? I Don't...But I'm Going to Start Watching It!
Maybe I've lived in the south a little too long and being a rebel has rubbed off on me. Perhaps it is a good thing. It has come to light that the administration has declared war on FOX news, and asked other news sources to avoid quoting them, and I do not like that on many levels. Currently, I don't watch the news on FOX, but I'm going to start watching it. I know this is a recent topic of discussion that's been in the news this week, and I am curious on how it is being received by others. Have you noticed there is no CSPAN coverage of the Health Care debate? Executive order does not want it televised. Is that a good thing? I think an informed public is a better thing. I am a conservative, but I read the NY Times and the Washington Post. They tend to be liberal in their viewpoints, but the articles are well written. As an adult I can form my own opinions after digesting several news sources. My government does not need to dictate what news sources I can or cannot view. Even the Enquirer has broken news stories in the past, and because it is a tabloid, does that mean there are no real stories there? I think not. Eliminating news sources is the first thing a dictatorship imposes. I want more sources of news than Tass or Pravda. I like news choices, and lots of them. Then let me make up my own mind to what they mean to me. That is my right as a citizen of the USA. Last I heard, this is not the Soviet Union...yet!
First of all out government has a lousy track record on choosing what is good for the citizens of the USA. NAFTA was a total planned failure, and we watched as our jobs, industries and wages went south of the border. It was embraced by both parties for their own self serving gains. Perhaps if we had a larger public outing of the impact of this legislation... we would not be looking at this current recession. We would still be an exporting nation. The planned subsequent switch to a service sector economy in a post NAFTA world was also dismal failure. The only person that called it right was H. Ross Perot, nad for his efforts our big 3 news medias played him as the fool. Perot got it right. The jobs left this country in droves, and will not be coming back. So in our new service sector economy, who are we supervising when everyone is unemployed and nothing is manufactured in the USA any more?
What other lies did our government feed us? Well for one, Y2K was total bunch of BS, and the war on terror should have secured our borders ASAP after 9/11. 8 year later and drugs and illegal aliens still cross the border at will. Illegal immigration - the Amnesty Bill was embraced by both parties as a power grab for votes. It would have easily passed had the public the US not caught on to what the politicians were up to. So the instant access to news, and Blogs keeps us all informed in real time, and we can contact our elected representatives to tell them how we will vote when their time comes up for re-election. This is how it is supposed to work. In a republic, our representation is through our elected officials.
Suppression of news, and banning the discussion of the events is an attempt to shut down the freedom of speech guaranteed in our Bill of Rights. The Constitution United States encompasses the Bill of Rights which are the first 10 Amendments to our Constitution. Personally I like this a lot. It also provides for transparency, and protects a public discussion of current events. That discussion could prevent a benevolent dictator from enforcing what he/she/or they think is best for the public without our knowledge. Tyranny exists when good people sit back and do nothing.
The First Amendment of the Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. was Ratified 12/15/1791.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The Preamble of the Constitution reads:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
It Preamble to the Constitution of the US does not promote the interests of one party over another. It is not about gaining political advantage.
